The Discover Life in America Media/PR Internship is a unique opportunity for a student who is interested in media and public relations. Public Relations and Media intern supports DLIA by raising awareness of, and generating good will toward this organization. The DLIA Public Relations and Media internship will engage in the development of a favorable image of our organization in the eyes of corporate and individual supporters/contributors, local schools, scientists, Park staff, public media, other organizations supporting the Park, and the public at large. Responsibilities include writing press releases, contacting media outlets, representing DLIA at events, scheduling and coordinating press releases, covering events and much more. Public Relations and Media work is an area that many small, not-for-profits need help with and don't have the infrastructure to hire a full-time person. This internship will be a great help in filling that gap.
The Media/PR intern is expected to:
- Monitor all forms of media
- Schedule and coordinate speaking engagements, appearances, photo shoots, and other special events
- Write press releases and other materials
- Screen phone calls
- Assist with mailings, print production
- Create interview preparation materials
- Evaluate and update Social media outlets
- Help with the management and updating of the website
- Compile contact lists
- Search for press clippings
- Create or update databases
- Greet guests and clients
Qualifications: Students applying for this internship must have strong communication skills and should be majoring in Public Relations, Communications, Marketing or Journalism. Applicants should also have strong writing skills, as well as a solid understanding of social media. Only interns proficient with Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office applications should apply.
In addition to these requirements, all interns should be comfortable with using computers for word processing and website management, be courteous with DLIA and National Park staff, and be able to express themselves effectively both orally and in writing.
The internship lasts for ten weeks in the summer, although the length and dates are flexible. The workplace is at Twin Creeks Natural Resource Center, just a mile outside of Gatlinburg, TN. Usually, we are able to offer interns Park housing at no cost to them in the Twin Creeks area, but this changes from year to year, as does the amount of the stipend offered to defray living expenses.
In the past, we have been helped by diverse interns with diverse interests. Students have used this immersion in biodiversity to fuel interests in everything from education to nature writing, and we encourage interns to use this opportunity to explore anything and everything they wish.
