The Discover Life in America Videography Internship is a unique opportunity for a student interested in multimedia, media relations, and biodiversity conservation. This summer internship supports DLIA by raising awareness of, and fostering good will toward this important, research-based organization housed in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The successful candidate for this internship will help promulgate a favorable image of our organization in the eyes of corporate and individual donors, schools, scientists, the staff of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and many of the organizations that support it; local, national, and international news media; other organizations supporting the park, and the public at large.
The videography intern is expected to:
- Develop stories to promote DLIA projects through video
- Conduct, film, edit, and archive interviews with DLIA staff, scientists, and volunteers
- Organize and edit collections of video materials
- Create videos for use on DLIA’s website, YouTube channel, and other online media
- Keep video work organized on office computer
- Perform other non-video related duties as assigned
Qualifications:
Current college students who have hands-on experience operating video camera equipment through class projects or the film or television industries, and/or experience filming and editing video are encouraged to apply. Applicants must also have writing skills and a thorough understanding of current and emerging social media.
Other desired qualifications include:
- Major in multimedia, public relations, journalism, communication, digital media, or computer science
- Strong organizational skills
- A strong sense of curiosity and the ability to conduct on-camera interviews
- Willingness to take initiative and motivation to seek new learning opportunities
- Keen attention to detail when editing and fact checking
- Flexibility and a good sense of humor
- Ability to meet deadlines
- Good research ability and command of the Internet
- Professionalism
In addition to these requirements, all interns should be comfortable with using computers for word processing and website management, be courteous with DLIA and National Park staff, and be able to express themselves effectively both orally and in writing.
The internship lasts for 10 weeks in the summer, although the length and dates are flexible. The workplace is at Twin Creeks Natural Resource Center, just a mile outside of Gatlinburg, Tenn. usually, we are able to offer interns park housing at no cost to them in the Twin Creeks area, but this changes from year to year, as does the amount of the stipend offered to defray living expenses.
In the past, we have been helped by diverse interns with diverse interests. Students have used this immersion in biodiversity to fuel interests in everything from education to nature writing, and we encourage interns to use this opportunity to explore anything and everything they wish.
